Synopsis

The narrative of ‘The Evil Within' focuses on the events unfolding after the death of Grace (Rose Newman), the nine year old daughter of Mark (Chris) and Eleanor Kerrison (not in trailer) – who died when the children were young. Their older daughter, Victoria (Rose Newman) (aged sixteen) is devastated by the loss of her sister and remains in the same black outfit she wore to the funeral.

It is made clear that the ghost of Grace is still evident in the house, but only Victoria can see her. In one instance shortly following her return, the camera angle is canted, combined with a medium shot focusing on Victoria as she glares at herself in the mirror. At this moment, there is a crack of thunder from a storm outside and her reflection in the mirror distorts from her actual appearance to reveal her inner evil.

Other psychological/supernatural factors happen further on to represent the mental state of Victoria. The main element of the film shows body horror and follows the death of the father when he is lying in his bed. A side shot of the bed reveals Victoria suddenly emerge from the far area where her father is laying, her hair matted over her face and a knife in her hand. She crawls on top of him and stabs him in the eye however this bit isn’t going to be included in the trailer. From this we learn that the father actually killed Grace and killing him was the revenge that Victoria had been seeking.

Victoria then runs from the scene of the crime. The camera focuses on the lower half of her legs and feet through a close up. She is seen walking towards the edge of a cliff during a thunderstorm. The final scene depicts a close up of her face looking blank, before a long shot of her silhouette as she falls over the edge, perhaps finally finding the mental peace she had searched for throughout her young life.
