Directors' Featurette

This is the Directors' Featurette that includes our trailer with a voice-over of myself answering questions about the production of our trailer and the trailers that influenced certain aspects of it. At the end of the trailer I have included images of posters from the films that are mentioned in the featurette and also images of the magazines and posters produced by Nada and myself as the voice-over interview is longer than the actual trailer. I added photos so that the viewer will have something to focus on instead of watching a blank screen. Overall the production of our trailer went well and I am happy with the final results.

Evaluation Question 1

Side-By-Side Poster Analysis

My poster is similar to the poster for Lovely Molly (2011) as the main image has a grainy effect under it to make the face look scarier, as it illustrates the possession and gives the audience an uneasy feeling about the main character. The eyes are also edited to show the possession of the character. The Lovely Molly poster has parchment lines across the page which distorts the image meaning that half of her face doesn't line up. I also included parchment lines on my poster however it doesn't distort the image, it just adds to the eeriness effect. The poster as a whole doesn't give away too much of the narrative so that the audience is left in suspense, meaning that they will anticipate the trailer even more. Both posters include a tagline from the film, mine being "You can't escape from what is inside you" which summarises the main narrative of the film. Both posters include a billing block which is typical on posters naming the actors/actress' in the film along with other people that helped create the final production. Mine includes logos of the film production companies 'Lynada Films' and 'East Norfolk Films' to identify a production team with the film. This creates further advertising. The masthead of the poster is similar to the masthead for 'Lovely Molly' as it is the same sort of font. This font is partly disjointed in areas which connotes the decreasing morality of the main female character. I also added a texture to it so that it contrasted with the background texture. This also connotes the split personality of the character when she is possessed by the demon as not everything on the poster is uniformed. The pointed edges of the masthead also connotes the demon's pointed fangs attempting to demonstrate how scary the main villain is. Both posters have a website address at the bottom so that audiences can get more information about the films.

Side-By-Side Cover Analysis

My magazine cover is similar to a Sight & Sound magazine as the main cover image is to one side of the page and shows the auteur of the film being described. This allows there to be room for the headings beside the image, making sure that no writing overlaps it, which makes it look professional. The background is a bold colour on both and in my case connotes the horror genre with the use of red and black. The circle on my magazine describes a free offer whereas the circle on the Sight & Sound magazine explains what else is included inside the magazine showing the importance of merchandise in my magazine to attract the target audience. The use of three headings is also a similarity between the two, however on my magazine the main sub-headings are larger than the rest of the text to emphasise what the heading is about and to attract the reader's attention. Instead of having the auteur's name across the bottom of the cover I included a film reel to illustrate certain aspects of our trailer to pike reader's interest. This also allowed the name of our trailer 'The Evil Within' to be shown in a bold font across the bottom centre of the page which will attract the reader's attention. I added the tagline above the masthead so that there was more reference to the trailer and the date and price are below the masthead. A difference between the two magazine covers is the fact that the main cover image is in front of the masthead on my magazine but behind the 'Sight & Sound' masthead on that magazine. This shows that my magazine is a well known brand, so that the whole masthead hasn't got to be shown to be recognised. This however doesn't mean that the 'Sight & Sound' brand isn't well known, as the masthead covering the image doesn't make any difference to the overall effect of the message. I have also included a strap-line which isn't seen on the other magazine.
